New Hair Obsession - Sultra Bombshell Curling Iron

Kate Hudson - Patron Saint of Beachy Hair
Alright guys, so I can't do hair.  It's just not something I have any kind of aptitude for and yet I have fairly long hair that is begging for something exciting to happen to it.  But every time I attempt to curl it in those pretty beachy wave situations that girls on TV have I just look like a mix between Shirley Temple and a contestant on "Toddlers and Tiaras" - until now!!

I was at a Sephora and they let me play with the Sultra Bombshell 1 inch Curling Iron (the one at 711 Lexington - not all of the locations have testers of the irons) and it was AWESOME!  I'm kind of obsessed and have been curling my hair ever since.

It takes a minute to readjust to the clipless factor if you're used to working with a traditional iron but this one is SO much easier for mere mortals, such as myself, and once you get the hang of it (which will take about 10 minutes) you will be a curling master!  I use Bumble and Bumble's Thickening Hairspray on my wet hair first and dry it (either air dry or with a blowdryer) and then section my hair off and use Living Proof's Hold Flexible Hairspray on each piece before I curl it; when it's done I spray it all over again.

The nice thing is you don't get "clip marks" and the ceramic "ionic technology" thing Sultra has going on keeps you from totally frying your hair.  And it lasts for days - DAYS.

Sofia Vergara - loose curls
If you use bigger sections of hair you get hair with a looser curl.

Katherine in "The Vampire Diaries"

Taylor Swift
Smaller sections of hair give you what I like to call "vampire hair" - because whenever people become vampires in movies their hair gets super curly :).  You could just say "Taylor Swift" hair, but that doesn't sound quite as fun.

Or, you can start with vampire hair and then (if you can make it without washing your hair!) let the curl fall out a little bit each day - the most I've made it is four days.

Kim Kardashian with oodles of curls - Day 1 Hair

Julia Roberts - Day 2 Hair

Nina Dobrev (as a vampire ya'll) - Day 3 Hair

Sarah Jessica Parker - Day 4 Hair
This video walks you through how to do it:

Also - they retail for $130 but are on sale for $119 at http://www.drugstore.com/.  Try it out - I'm in love :)!

Golden Globes Makeup

I can't help it - I want to look at pretty pictures of movie stars :) - they all looked so beautiful!  Here are the themes I saw at the Golden Globes:

RED LIPS - Whether deep vermilion or a sheer cherry, red was THE color of the evening ~

Angelina Jolie rocking the red

Claire Danes in a true blue red

Diana Argon pulling off red from head to toe

Missi Pyle with a beautiful bold lip

Viola Davis with a berry red

Diane Lane with a sheer red

Helen Mirren with a sheer berry

NUDE LIPS - flipping to the other side of the spectrum came a nude lip, some going a little more rosy, with a nearly nude eye - seriously - tons of matte bone eyeshadow and lashes and that was it - very natural and very pretty ~

Charlize Theron with the lightest lips of the evening

Nicole Kidman coming in with a close second on the nudey lip front

I love that Reese Witherspoon did a soft color instead of feeling "matchy" with a bold red lip

A little more beige in this lip shade since Salma Hayek has a smidge of a deeper complexion

Didn't Jodie Foster look so pretty?!  I thought she was radiant!

And you can't beat Meryl Streep - a little more of a rose shade to give some pep

A rosy gloss on Paula Patton

Michelle Williams in a bee stung shade

MINOR TO MAJOR SMOKE - still keeping with minimal lipshades, some ladies went with a soft smoke while others dipped majorly into the eyeliner pot ~

Kate Beckinsdale adding a little smoke

Rooney Mara with a winged liner

Kind of a far away picture but her makeup was gorgeous

Great look for anyone on Miss Evan Rachel Wood - little smokey with a medium liptone

Octavia Spencer pulling a little plum into her smokey eye and a nude lip

Sarah Michelle Gellar with a little navy pulled into hers

Zooey Deshanel with lashes for DAYS

And the makeup queen of the evening - Emma Stone with all sorts of colors going on on the eye - black, silver, green, blue - the whole shebang!

"The Today Show" with Mally Roncal

I just woke up from a post-work nap after getting to do "The Today Show" this morning with Mally Roncal and Mally Beauty, http://www.mallybeauty.com/.  It was super fun and Mally was fab as usual.  Here's the segment link - http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/45957137#45957137 (if it's crabby and plays something else just scroll up to the video that says "Turn Beauty Blunders into Style Sensations").

And here's how the day went!

Our call time was 6:45 am so I rolled up to Rockefeller Center with my kit full of Mally happiness and met up with my girl, Nina Soriano, the other lovely artist for the day.  The guests all get their makeup/hair done in the Green Room which is in the lower level of the building.  To get there you pass by the control room which was neat!  Once in the Green Room there is a row of about eight makeup artists and hairstylists - no photos were allowed otherwise I would have one for you!  There are three little rooms off of the row of beauty peeps - Martha Stewart was in the one next to ours (she is a very big Mally Beauty fan)!

So we unpacked all of our Mally goodies and proceeded to get going on our four models.  I got to do Cindy - the grey hair model - and Alia - the dark circles model.  Here's what we used (all products Mally Beauty):

Perfect Prep Poreless Primer
Ultimate Performance Full Coverage Foundation in Medium
Water Resistant Cancellation Conditioning Concealer SPF 25 in Light
Visible Skin Adjustable Foundation Powder in Light
Brownstone Smoky Eye Kit
Midnight Waterproof Liner on top
Volumizing Mascara
Brow Express Bulletproof Brow System in Taupe
24/7 Professional Blush System in Blush Light
Effortless Airbrush Highlighter and Blush Duo (highlighter only)
Life is Fuschia Lipgloss
Be A Peach Lipgloss

Perfect Prep Poreless Primer
Ultimate Performance Full Coverage Foundation in Tan
Water Resistant Cancellation Conditioning Concealer SPF 25 in Medium
Poreless Perfection Skin Finisher
Effortless Airbrush Highlighter Blush Duo (highlighter as eyeshadow and cheek highlight; blush as blush :)
Midnight Waterproof Liner on top
Volumizing Mascara
Brow Beauty Double Ended Pencil in Brunette
BSexy Gloss

Once the models were ready, Mally got into her dress, her hairdresser, Dennis, gave her some pretty curls, she walked through the segment with her amazing assistant, Sayra, and the PR girls and then they all headed upstairs to the studio (there was an actual NBC page who came and got everybody - just like Kenneth on 30 Rock!) to shoot the segment.

Nina and I watched it on one of the TVs in the Green Room.  Mally covered flattering makeup for women with glasses, grey hair, braces and dark circles and had some great tips!  We later hobnobbed with Carolee Carmello (amazing Tony-award winning actress) who was singing later on in the show - hello fancy!

Then we packed up and headed home - a lovely day's work, done at 10am :)!

New Year's Resolutions

Alright my loves, we are going to get serious about some promises I would like for you to make to yourself in the beauty realm - if you already do this, marvelous!  If not, please reconsider your life choices and start taking some responsibility for your pretty face.

I know it rains.  And I'm totally aware that some days it's really cloudy and you can't even see the sun.  But guess what - those little UVA/UVB rays can see you through the rain and through the clouds and they are zapping your face with age.  Making you have age spots.  I like to think of the nursing home that my great grandmother was in when I was little and the ladies with freckled hands.  You don't want a sun spotted hand or face, right?  Right.  SPF on ANYTHING the sun will see - face, lips, ears, neck, chest, hands - will change your situation.

You don't have to buy anything fancy - if you have natural bristled brushes you can use your face soap or your shampoo.  If you have synthetic fiber brushes dish soap works really well.  Once a month is all I'm asking.  You can do it :).

Mascara needs to go after three months.  If that makes you mad then buy cheap mascara.  Lipgloss needs to go after one year.  If you are rocking colors from college you need to sit down, light a candle, whisper a prayer, say goodbye to your senior citizen item and throw it in the trash.

Beautiful peach blush on Beyonce

Amazing red lips on Michelle Williams

Barbara Walters rocks lipgloss on the regular peeps.

If you always wear pink blush, try a peach.  If you always wear bronzer, try a blush.  If you think lipgloss is for youngsters get one with no shimmer and throw it on top of your lipstick.  If you think lipstick is for old ladies get a sheer color or an awesome red and see what the fuss is all about.

Do you want to look like this in your later years?

Or this?
It matters peeps.  It's the first spot to age because we don't have oil glands and we can't self hydrate.  Look at your friends - men and women - little lines creep up here first and if you can do preventative work it is SO much easier than reparative.  Keep your eye cream next in your nightstand - that way you don't have to get out of bed to do it at night.

She's really thinking "awesome, you want to borrow my lipstick and now I have to just give it to you."

I know it feels mean, but do not let your girlfriend borrow your lipstick unless you can squirt it out onto her finger.  Otherwise you might as well give her a big smooch on the lips.  And your mascara is not allowed to be friends with someone else's lashes - you have a very exclusive relationship and that's how it should stay.  If you don't know what to say just say "oh, I'm not feeling well, I don't think it's a good idea to share".  Or tell them you don't want their cooties - either way your makeup stays YOUR makeup.
